The Fastest Night On The Central Coast

Wednesday Jun 19, 2024
This week on the West of Tulsa, a preview of a major project the entire team has been working on since last year. We invited 11 hot rod legends to join us before a live audience to talk about the start of the racing culture. Our goal from the beginning has been to document and preserve their stories before they disappear forever. Now that we have them on tape talking about everything from the first legal drag strip in the U.S. to the start of the NHRA, we can save these stories for generations to come. We will start in the 1920's and work our way through World War II when the GI's came home to present day racing. We are working a longer version of this show, but we don't know when that part of the project will be ready. Stay tuned!

Secrets of Vintage Trailer & Car Enthusiasts Revealed
Wednesday May 22, 2024
Wednesday May 22, 2024
Our guest this week on the @WestofTulsa Show is David Neel, Executive Director of the Murphy Auto Museum in Oxnard, California. He took over the museum from the man who founded it, Dr. Murphy. David talks about stepping down from that role and is making an offer to our listeners and viewers. Whoever wants his museum can have it. He’ll give it to you. However, it’s more complicated than that and he explains why.
David talks in detail about what you’ll see at the museum, everything from mid-century vintage trailers to model trains, an impressive diecast collection and a slot car track that will blow your mind. The museum also has a section dedicated to Indianapolis 500 Champion and former CEO of STP, Andy Granatelli.
David also talks about his love for anything vintage, especially vintage trailers from teardrops to Airstreams, a one of a kind Holt trailer house and something called The Big Ugly. We’ll let him explain the name, where it came from and how it impacts traffic on the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles. He describes how he found ‘his tribe’ in vintage camper rallies and why everyone should see Lucy and Desi in the movie, The long, long trailer. David also has a passion for station wagons. He has a Checker Marathon, a Studebaker Wagonaire which tows his matching trailer boat.
Our show is briefly interrupted by construction workers next door to our studio. Something that Pat McAfee probably doesn’t have to deal with. We also talk about the Murphy Auto Museum and the Mullin Auto Museum closing within months of each other. What’s going on?
Finally, David, a professed Jeep snob, also talks about his connection to Tulsa and the State of Oklahoma where his family is from before heading west during the dust bowl days.
Enjoy the show and please don’t forget to like, follow, subscribe and let us know if you have a great car story by clicking on our Tipline page at www.westoftulsa.com.

TALKING HOT RODS WITH TONY BAKER
This week on the West of Tulsa Show we talk with automotive historian, author and all around great guy Tony Baker.
He’s written seven books since 2012 about the early days of hot rodding after World War II and through the years from the Central Coast of California down to Southern California. We showered Tony with praise because we know so many people who have his books. He talks about the glory days of the 1950’s and the people who started legal racing as we know it today. Actor James Dean racing at the old Santa Barbara Airport in 1954 where the first legal drag strip in the nation was located and it’s still there, to drag racing legend Don Prudhomme.
Tony shows us photos of the first Santa Barbara Acceleration Association to the Carpinteria Thunderbowl and the drag strips in the San Fernando Valley. He also goes out on a limb and tells us which county, in his opinion, had the fastest racers in those days. You may not agree!
We also discuss topics like racing at Bonneville, Jalopy Racing, Midget racing, Ford versus Ferrari, the Burbank Road Kings, the Motor Monarchs and a connection to the iconic movie American Graffiti.
We hope you enjoy the show and please don’t forget to like, follow and subscribe and we will see you West of Tulsa.

Car Care, Emergency Preparedness & Speed Dating - West Of Tulsa Show #0018
Wednesday May 08, 2024
Wednesday May 08, 2024
Join CJ Ward and the West at Tulsa team in Studio 3 as they discuss car care, emergency preparedness, and even speed dating in this entertaining episode! Don't miss out on the fun and subscribe to stay updated on all their latest shows.
This week on the West of Tulsa Show, guests Melissa Wahe with CarmaCare and Christina Jimenez with @MsMotorheadPodcast discuss everything from their new speed dating venture to the importance of basic car care.
Christina updates the team on her idea to start a speed dating event for car people. This is something she first discussed during her first appearance on West of Tulsa. It may have started off as a joke, but so many people loved her idea, she’s taking it seriously now and even roped Melissa in on her plans. We talk about that in detail and how Dan and Helm will be guinea pigs for this newly hatched dating service. Christina says she watches the TV show Dating on the Spectrum and loves it, so there might be similarities?
Eventually, we get to Melissa’s CarmaCare and how she came up with the idea to help mostly young women and teens understand their vehicles better. She just taught the Boy Scouts so she’ll help anyone who needs it. She offers free classes which help people understand everything from basic car care and maintenance to emergency knowledge and safety. It can be life saving information and it’s empowering. We also talk about the differences between how a man and a woman talk to a mechanic. That should get an interesting response from folks.
Melissa talks about how her idea for CarmaCare started while she was really sick. She died on the operating table and once she was able, started to rehab her left leg by repeatedly using the clutch. She eventually ended up on the track and revived dreams of being a Formula 1 driver. We’ll let her tell the story. Finally, we talk about 511, why everyone should know it and why Rob Dahm is so hot, that’s according to Melissa and Christina.

Why it’s so difficult to own just one Miata!!
This week on the West of Tulsa Show, our guests are Ralph and Ryan Gold with R&R Motorworks in Goleta, California. They are a father and son team that have a passion for everything Mazda Miata. Ralph is more old school and loves his muscle cars including a 1964 Chevrolet Corvette and a 1971 Oldsmobile 442. His son Ryan is into JDM and the Miata’s. He taught his father a thing or two about the benefits and the fun of owning, not just one Miata, but more than one.
The Gold’s talk about the process which allows them to work together so well. They say it was a learning curve, mostly by Ralph about the new way of doing things. Ryan believes the Miata is one of the best cars ever made and considering the fact that the Miata is about to celebrate its 35th anniversary, he could be right. The car is now a classic.
Ralph and Ryan also talk in detail about their customers and what it takes to modify a Miata for the track whether it's set up to race or autocross. They talk about the aftermarket support for Miatas and the performance you can get out of them when you turbocharge or supercharge one of these small, nimble cars.
We also discuss why it’s so difficult for some Miata lovers to own just one car. Affordability, reliability and just plain fun are some of the reasons why. And the Gold’s explain how they were put on the map in some circles when they built a car for the Fast ‘n Furious movie series. That car was a beautiful blue Mitsubishi Evo. And finally, we breakdown the pluses and minuses of owning a daily driver or race-ready Miata.

Manz Motor Company: The Father & Son Defender Team - West Of Tulsa Show #0016
Wednesday Apr 24, 2024
Wednesday Apr 24, 2024
Join us as we explore the fascinating story behind Manz Motor Company, a family-owned business specializing in restoring and customizing Land Rover Defenders. Meet the dedicated father and son team behind the operation, as they take us through their process and share their passion for these iconic vehicles in this episode of West Of Tulsa Show.
Our guests this week on the West of Tulsa Show are a father and son team who strip down and customize Land Rover Defenders. David and Cole Manz are building 6 by 6 Defenders powered by an LS3 motor with 3 axles. They traveled all the way from New Hampshire to join us in studio and we really appreciate it. They battled snow, pneumonia, flakey truck drivers, canceled car shows and much more to be with us.
The Manz Motor Company is essentially doing for Land Rover Defenders what Singer is doing for Porsches. They strip the vehicle down and build it back up to exactly the specs and tastes their customers want in a Defender.
David talks about retiring from his corporate job to team up with his son to follow a passion. They talk about the barn where they do most of the work on these beautiful vehicles. They considered Unimogs and Land Cruisers before making a trip to England to meet up with two brothers who convinced them that their dream should be reality. During their trip to the UK they built their supply chain of OEM parts and got right to work once they returned home.
The Manz talk about who their customers are and what they want in a custom Defender. They offer many options including Cummins Diesel motors and they are even considering offering an electric powered Defender, although that’s not on the menu yet.
You will love their story and hopefully they inspire you to follow your dream. As always, the entire West of Tulsa Team appreciates your support. Please follow, like and subscribe and don’t forget to tell us your story on our Tipline page at www.westoftulsa.com
