August lived on the East Coast as a kid and moved to California as a young man and started building Hollywood movies sets and studying all types of design. Plus, we talk about the new Broncos. Secrets of Vintage Trailer & Car Enthusiasts Revealed
Wednesday May 22, 2024
Wednesday May 22, 2024
Our guest this week on the @WestofTulsa Show is David Neel, Executive Director of the Murphy Auto Museum in Oxnard, California. He took over the museum from the man who founded it, Dr. Murphy. David talks about stepping down from that role and is making an offer to our listeners and viewers. Whoever wants his museum can have it. He’ll give it to you. However, it’s more complicated than that and he explains why.
David talks in detail about what you’ll see at the museum, everything from mid-century vintage trailers to model trains, an impressive diecast collection and a slot car track that will blow your mind. The museum also has a section dedicated to Indianapolis 500 Champion and former CEO of STP, Andy Granatelli.
David also talks about his love for anything vintage, especially vintage trailers from teardrops to Airstreams, a one of a kind Holt trailer house and something called The Big Ugly. We’ll let him explain the name, where it came from and how it impacts traffic on the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles. He describes how he found ‘his tribe’ in vintage camper rallies and why everyone should see Lucy and Desi in the movie, The long, long trailer. David also has a passion for station wagons. He has a Checker Marathon, a Studebaker Wagonaire which tows his matching trailer boat.
Our show is briefly interrupted by construction workers next door to our studio. Something that Pat McAfee probably doesn’t have to deal with. We also talk about the Murphy Auto Museum and the Mullin Auto Museum closing within months of each other. What’s going on?
Finally, David, a professed Jeep snob, also talks about his connection to Tulsa and the State of Oklahoma where his family is from before heading west during the dust bowl days.

TALKING HOT RODS WITH TONY BAKER
This week on the West of Tulsa Show we talk with automotive historian, author and all around great guy Tony Baker.
He’s written seven books since 2012 about the early days of hot rodding after World War II and through the years from the Central Coast of California down to Southern California. We showered Tony with praise because we know so many people who have his books. He talks about the glory days of the 1950’s and the people who started legal racing as we know it today. Actor James Dean racing at the old Santa Barbara Airport in 1954 where the first legal drag strip in the nation was located and it’s still there, to drag racing legend Don Prudhomme.
Tony shows us photos of the first Santa Barbara Acceleration Association to the Carpinteria Thunderbowl and the drag strips in the San Fernando Valley. He also goes out on a limb and tells us which county, in his opinion, had the fastest racers in those days. You may not agree!
We also discuss topics like racing at Bonneville, Jalopy Racing, Midget racing, Ford versus Ferrari, the Burbank Road Kings, the Motor Monarchs and a connection to the iconic movie American Graffiti.
We hope you enjoy the show and please don’t forget to like, follow and subscribe and we will see you West of Tulsa.

Car Care, Emergency Preparedness & Speed Dating - West Of Tulsa Show #0018
Wednesday May 08, 2024
Wednesday May 08, 2024
Join CJ Ward and the West at Tulsa team in Studio 3 as they discuss car care, emergency preparedness, and even speed dating in this entertaining episode! Don't miss out on the fun and subscribe to stay updated on all their latest shows.
This week on the West of Tulsa Show, guests Melissa Wahe with CarmaCare and Christina Jimenez with @MsMotorheadPodcast discuss everything from their new speed dating venture to the importance of basic car care.
Christina updates the team on her idea to start a speed dating event for car people. This is something she first discussed during her first appearance on West of Tulsa. It may have started off as a joke, but so many people loved her idea, she’s taking it seriously now and even roped Melissa in on her plans. We talk about that in detail and how Dan and Helm will be guinea pigs for this newly hatched dating service. Christina says she watches the TV show Dating on the Spectrum and loves it, so there might be similarities?
Eventually, we get to Melissa’s CarmaCare and how she came up with the idea to help mostly young women and teens understand their vehicles better. She just taught the Boy Scouts so she’ll help anyone who needs it. She offers free classes which help people understand everything from basic car care and maintenance to emergency knowledge and safety. It can be life saving information and it’s empowering. We also talk about the differences between how a man and a woman talk to a mechanic. That should get an interesting response from folks.
Melissa talks about how her idea for CarmaCare started while she was really sick. She died on the operating table and once she was able, started to rehab her left leg by repeatedly using the clutch. She eventually ended up on the track and revived dreams of being a Formula 1 driver. We’ll let her tell the story. Finally, we talk about 511, why everyone should know it and why Rob Dahm is so hot, that’s according to Melissa and Christina.

Why it’s so difficult to own just one Miata!!
This week on the West of Tulsa Show, our guests are Ralph and Ryan Gold with R&R Motorworks in Goleta, California. They are a father and son team that have a passion for everything Mazda Miata. Ralph is more old school and loves his muscle cars including a 1964 Chevrolet Corvette and a 1971 Oldsmobile 442. His son Ryan is into JDM and the Miata’s. He taught his father a thing or two about the benefits and the fun of owning, not just one Miata, but more than one.
The Gold’s talk about the process which allows them to work together so well. They say it was a learning curve, mostly by Ralph about the new way of doing things. Ryan believes the Miata is one of the best cars ever made and considering the fact that the Miata is about to celebrate its 35th anniversary, he could be right. The car is now a classic.
Ralph and Ryan also talk in detail about their customers and what it takes to modify a Miata for the track whether it's set up to race or autocross. They talk about the aftermarket support for Miatas and the performance you can get out of them when you turbocharge or supercharge one of these small, nimble cars.
We also discuss why it’s so difficult for some Miata lovers to own just one car. Affordability, reliability and just plain fun are some of the reasons why. And the Gold’s explain how they were put on the map in some circles when they built a car for the Fast ‘n Furious movie series. That car was a beautiful blue Mitsubishi Evo. And finally, we breakdown the pluses and minuses of owning a daily driver or race-ready Miata.

Manz Motor Company: The Father & Son Defender Team - West Of Tulsa Show #0016
Wednesday Apr 24, 2024
Wednesday Apr 24, 2024
Join us as we explore the fascinating story behind Manz Motor Company, a family-owned business specializing in restoring and customizing Land Rover Defenders. Meet the dedicated father and son team behind the operation, as they take us through their process and share their passion for these iconic vehicles in this episode of West Of Tulsa Show.
Our guests this week on the West of Tulsa Show are a father and son team who strip down and customize Land Rover Defenders. David and Cole Manz are building 6 by 6 Defenders powered by an LS3 motor with 3 axles. They traveled all the way from New Hampshire to join us in studio and we really appreciate it. They battled snow, pneumonia, flakey truck drivers, canceled car shows and much more to be with us.
The Manz Motor Company is essentially doing for Land Rover Defenders what Singer is doing for Porsches. They strip the vehicle down and build it back up to exactly the specs and tastes their customers want in a Defender.
David talks about retiring from his corporate job to team up with his son to follow a passion. They talk about the barn where they do most of the work on these beautiful vehicles. They considered Unimogs and Land Cruisers before making a trip to England to meet up with two brothers who convinced them that their dream should be reality. During their trip to the UK they built their supply chain of OEM parts and got right to work once they returned home.
The Manz talk about who their customers are and what they want in a custom Defender. They offer many options including Cummins Diesel motors and they are even considering offering an electric powered Defender, although that’s not on the menu yet.
You will love their story and hopefully they inspire you to follow your dream. As always, the entire West of Tulsa Team appreciates your support. Please follow, like and subscribe and don’t forget to tell us your story on our Tipline page at www.westoftulsa.com

Z Owners Unite: A Conversation with Jeffrey Willerth - West Of Tulsa Show #0015
Wednesday Apr 17, 2024
Wednesday Apr 17, 2024
Join us for an #exclusive conversation with Jeffrey Willerth as we delve into the resurgence of the #Z Club of America. Discover the history, impact, and future of this iconic organization within the cultural landscape. Gain valuable insights and behind-the-scenes stories from a key figure in the Z Club community. Don't miss this in-depth exploration of the enduring legacy of the Z Club.
This week on the West of Tulsa Show, the team welcomes Jeffrey Willerth. He’s the Vice President of the Z Club of America and has been a member since the early 1980’s. He gives a shout out to a previous West of Tulsa guest and he talks about his early days in the media. His first interview was with legendary drag racer Shirley Muldowney. She’s getting a lot of airtime on the West of Tulsa Show, maybe she should be on our show!
Willerth also talks about the first time he saw a Datsun Z car in the 1970’s. He says it was the Jaguar XKE of his generation and he instantly fell in love with the body lines, then got into racing them at Limerock and other tracks. He met Joe Casella, the founder of the Z Club of America, in the early 1980’s and they’ve been friends ever since.
Willerth talks in detail about why the Z Club went dormant for decades until Covid hit and then Nissan announced a new Z was coming. He jumped at the chance to revive the Z Club of America with Casella’s blessing and guidance. He also talks about the shortcomings of Nissan’s marketing for the Z car and how a generation of heavier cushier Z’s helped in the brands decline through the 1990’s. We discuss how Nissan could take a page from Mazda and how that Japanese automaker really gets behind the rotary and Mazda car clubs. Willerth also talks about a big car show he’s planning for 2025 and that it will include JDM from all over Southern California. Also, are new Z car club chapters starting around the country? How to join the club if you’re interested. A crazy story about one of his Z’s being stolen and where it was found, plus his passion for deep fried avocados from Tulsa!!

West of Tulsa Podcast: "State of the Show" Episode #0014
Wednesday Apr 10, 2024
Wednesday Apr 10, 2024
Join us in this special #StateoftheShow episode of @WestOfTulsa Podcast, where we reflect on our journey so far, share exciting updates, and give a sneak peek into what's coming next. Tune in to hear behind-the-scenes stories, favorite moments, and our vision for the future. Get ready to be inspired and entertained as we celebrate the state of our show!
This week on the West of Tulsa Show, we feature ourselves! We don't have a guest and we are testing out our new studio. It's just C.J., Gabe and Dan talking about all kinds of stuff for almost an hour. Dan breaks down the improvements we made to the studio including new Black Magic cameras and a switcher.
We consider this show, our "State of the Show Address" after 3 months on the air. We talk about the controversial show that we taped but never aired because some people thought we crossed the line and were too inappropriate. We can't get specific, but we come very close to giving it away. We also discuss some of the most commented on Instagram posts on our West of Tulsa IG page. One topic deals with the difficulty in finding shops that will do restoration work on classic cars and why many shops are just accepting insurance work.
Gabe talks about how Helm attended a Hagerty - Mercedes Benz meet in Van Nuys and people there recognized him from the West of Tulsa Show. Wait, does that mean some people actually watch us? We also discuss how Helm is getting so comfortable in front of the camera that he may take over the Tonight Show. We also gave too much trivia about the Tonight Show from Johnny Carson to Jimmy Fallon to Jack Paar.
Other topics we discuss include, Speed dating for car people, navigation apps and whether they are good or bad from WAZE, Google maps, Tesla, Apple and even KABC LA's traffic map. We talked about off-roading G-Wagons, why new pickup trucks are so expensive, Corvairs and Ralph Nader, Pintos, the Mitsubishi Delica, Ferrari FF, the 1963 Corvette and C.J.'s Uncle Eddie who watches every show from Vero Beach, Florida.
Finally, Gabe makes an impassioned plea for people to contact us on our Tipline page and tell their stories. You don't have to be famous or have a million-dollar car to have a car story. We want to hear from you! And please, follow, like and subscribe. We'll see you West of Tulsa.

Platypus: A Conversation with Dana Newquist and Bruce Terry - West of Tulsa Show #0012
Wednesday Apr 03, 2024
Wednesday Apr 03, 2024
Join us for a fascinating conversation about #carcollecting and #metalsculpting with collector Dana Newquist and metal sculptor Bruce Terry. Learn about the unique artistry and #craftsmanship behind their work, and gain insight into the world of car collecting and metal sculpting. Don't miss this insightful discussion on the creative process and passion for automotive and metal art. This week on the West of Tulsa Show we welcome two guys who you may know already from our social media. Dana Newquist has one of the most diverse collections around. I can’t say classic car collections because Dana has everything from a vintage fire truck to a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang car and a 1948 Republic CB airplane that he’s converting into a roadworthy creation that he affectionately calls Platypus. Dana also explains how he came up with the name and if that name will stick by the time the project is done. One of the creative minds behind Platypus is Bruce Terry. Bruce is a master metal fabricator who has taken his talents to new heights. He’s really a sculptor. West of Tulsa visited Bruce’s shop to see where he turns crazy ideas and dreams into reality. He gave us a tour and showed us the progress they’re making on Platypus. The 1948 airplane fuselage is being reimagined piece by piece incorporating Art Deco design into an automobile. It’s powered by a 1948 Mercury flathead V8 which Dana says was a suggestion made by Chip Foose. Dana and Bruce tell the story about how they teamed up to build Platypus. The two men did not know each other before Dana reached out and roped Bruce into not retiring and doing this project. They talk in detail about how Platypus has evolved through the creative process, what works now and ideas that never got off the ground. We ask Dana about the vehicles in his collection and Bruce talks about his decades of experience working on concourse vehicles featured at Pebble Beach Car Week, everything from Mercedes Benz 300 SL's to rare Porsches. Both men also talk about where their love of classic cars came from and its connection to their childhood. The entire West of Tulsa team also discussed the possibility of Dana being stopped by the police in Platypus. Would he get pulled over just because the officer wants to know what it is? Or because the police might question if it’s legal? Bruce also talks about his homemade English Wheel he uses to hand form the metal pieces. He shows us the components, why he felt the need to build it and how that one 1100 pound piece of machinery is his legacy. Dana and Bruce also discuss a new project that involves an electric vehicle that’s more than 100 years old and is powered by several thousand pounds of batteries. Dana also talks about one of his favorite cars that used to be an MGM Studio lot car and one of Clark Gable’s favorite ways to drive around Hollywood during the Golden Age of Film. Exploring Unique Cars with George Mayer | Owner of Spot 44 | West of Tulsa Show #0011
Wednesday Mar 27, 2024
Wednesday Mar 27, 2024
Join us as we take a deep dive into the world of unique #cars with George Mayer, the owner of Spot 44. From #vintage #classics to rare finds, George shares his passion and knowledge for these extraordinary vehicles. Get ready to be amazed by the stories behind each car and the innovative features that make them stand out in the automotive industry.
We have two 'firsts' on this week's West of Tulsa Show. We welcome our first #Brazilian guest, George Mayer, owner of Spot 44 in Thousand Oaks. And we welcome back our first repeat guest, Craig Lichtenstein. George Mayer talks about how his father inspired him to work on and own collector cars. His father lives in Brazil and worked for #DKW for many years until it was purchased by Volkswagen. Craig drove his 2003 Jaguar XKR to the West of Tulsa Studio. He talks about how it took 3 years to recondition the car because it's so complicated and it has a black box!
George also talks about his VW #SP2 which his dad helped ship to the U.S. He also gives more information about his award-winning rat rod and what is a rat rod. His car has a Cummins Diesel motor, a calf hoof gear shifter and 6-inch pizza trays for wheel covers. George also has military vehicles, one that's about as big as a house. What do his neighbors think of these monster vehicles? You'll be surprised.
George and Craig also explain how they met. It had a lot to do with 3-wheel Morgans, breastfeeding and a very angry new mom. George also has an original Mini and an impressive motorcycle collection that includes a BMW R69 that was given to him by a friend who cared more about their friendship and appreciation for great rides than money. And how George stumbled up on James Cameron's VRod motorcycle. Yes, the same James Cameron who directed the movies Titanic, Avatar and Terminator.
Finally, he's trying to unload an old Studebaker. It can be yours. We hope you enjoy this episode of West of Tulsa and please follow, like and subscribe. We also have our Tipline at westoftulsa.com. We would love to feature your story. S
